Mechanism of action
SS-31, known internationally as elamipretide, belongs to the mitochondria-targeting peptides. The molecule interacts with cardiolipin, a phospholipid of the inner mitochondrial membrane. Cardiolipin arranges the proteins of the respiratory chain and shapes the curvature of the cristae. In cell and tissue models, work follows how SS-31 stabilizes membrane tension, eases load on the electron transport chain, and lowers formation of reactive oxygen species under stress. The focus is mitochondrial bioenergetics: ATP synthesis, membrane potential, and organelle integrity. Laboratories that buy SS-31 take elamipretide at 10 mg per vial.
Reconstitution and handling
The lyophilizate is reconstituted in the laboratory with a suitable sterile solvent. The solvent is added slowly along the vessel wall and the preparation is mixed gently until the powder has fully dissolved. The resulting solution is used promptly in the planned assays, because peptides in solution respond more readily to surrounding conditions. Until use, the reagent is kept out of direct light. The laboratory running the work sets concentration and volume in its own protocol.
In-vitro research
In in-vitro research, SS-31 is a reference substance for mitochondrial function assays. Typical uses include measurements of mitochondrial membrane potential, OCR and ECAR profiles in isolated mitochondria or intact cells, and ROS detection with fluorescent probes. Models with induced oxidative load or a disrupted respiratory chain use the peptide to follow recovery of membrane integrity and ATP production. Interaction studies with cardiolipin-containing liposomes or reconstituted membrane systems characterize binding affinity and the effect on membrane fluidity. The compact tetrapeptide structure makes defined dilution series straightforward for concentration-response curves in multiwell plates.
Quality and analytics
Each batch of SS-31 is checked by HPLC for purity; the content is ≥99 %. An identity check confirms the tetrapeptide backbone of elamipretide. Results are recorded per batch. This analytical profile gives a reliable basis for comparing measurement series and for the reproducibility of mitochondrial in-vitro experiments.
Available amounts per vial: 10 mg, 50 mg. Box of 10 vials.
Quality, purity & batch documentation
Every batch is analyzed by an independent laboratory via HPLC before shipment. We document purity (avg. 99.41% in 2026), mass spectrometry identity, and sterility. Production follows GMP standards in ISO-certified laboratories.
